Tons of people ask how I managed to do it but truth is I always felt way better about working more hours and it not draining me and I felt more productive. It is great to see that the world is moving along with this trend but it is certainly still difficult to find this gems of employment. I’d say that 85% of our inner office conversations actually take place on iChat. We use iChat to show our statuses among coworkers and Skype and now Google + hangouts for staff meetings or complex conversations. We have set hours because much of our work is customer service and technical support. After doing this for 2 years, I don’t understand why more companies aren’t using this model. It works and I get to spend time with my kids and dogs and garden I LOVE it I will never clock into a 9-5 again.

I’ve been working at home as a virtual assistant/online business manager for several years now and not only is there an adjustment and level of discipline needed on the part of the teleworker but also on the part of the manager/supervisor/boss. Virtual work can be incredibly successful and efficient with the aid of some clear ground rules and expectations on things like availability, productivity requirements, etc. There is a huge amount of trust that must occur in the working relationship when employees are not right “under the boss’ nose” so establishing a framework in the beginning is helpful.
