After all the racial tension over the shooting in Florida, Obama makes a comment like, "If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon Martin" which helped to create even more tension. When the president speaks some people listen and if he says something inflammatory he can spark flames. Richard in Texas:Actually with some of the things he has said and done Obama has hurt race relations more then he has helped them. Saying that the white police officers "Acted stupidly" when they arrested his friend Professor Gates at Cambridge.

Unfortunately, there are still many in this country who claim they despise the president because of his policies when, in fact, it's a pigment of their imagination. John in Watertown, Massachusetts:I really don't believe that they have changed that much. Black people were thrilled that Obama was elected along with an obvious majority of whites.

When that happens, then we can begin to come together as a people. Both can't seem to get to the microphones fast enough to spew the racial hate they are so famous for. The president can not change race relations as long as there is the likes of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. These two individuals have done more to harm race relations, through their hate speeches whenever there is any type of race controversy in the news, than all of the race riots of the last 45 years. Before relations can improve greatly, the microphones must be taken away from them.

When the president speaks some people listen and if he says something inflammatory he can spark flames. Saying that the White Police Officers "Acted stupidly" when they arrested his friend Professor Gates at Cambridge. Actually with some of the things he has said and done Obama has hurt race relations more then he has helped them. These are real peoples lives he is speaking out about not his political foes. After all the racial tension over the shooting in Florida Obama makes a comment like, "If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon Martin" which helped to create even more tension.

Black people were thrilled that Obama was elected along with an obvious majority of whites. I really don't believe that they have changed that much. Unfortunately, there are still many in this country who claim they despise the President because of his policies when, in fact, it's a pigment of their imagination.

.It has succeeded in bringing our the ugly under-belly of American racism and bigotry that most of the world knew was there .when we read that on the night Obama was declared winner of the presdency .plans were underfoot to make sure he was a one-term president .Why?? they didn't even know what his four years would bring .you guessed it .the color of his skin .Americans were at one time admired and envied .they are now depised by the educated ,informed and intelligent free thinkers around the world .here in Canada the worst insult you can call anyone is to say ."He's so ignorant and stupid .as bad as an American .".Obama's election has caused the twisted face of hatred to surface and become unfortunately the image most people carry with them when asked about the USA. .B.C.Canada .

It's not really any change caused by the president. But, there has been a polarization because of a significant element of the new radical right GOP that despises ANY black person running our country. He hasn't really promoted anything new in race relations. They are the same people that say he's not an American, that he's a Muslim and a socialist, even when all have been proved false. Fortunately, he's a lot smater than they are and will rescue the economy in a second term. They have been working to make him fail at everything he tries to do.

Racism is alive and thriving in the GOP.I grew up in a rural town in Southwest VA. Well, I don't know , Jack. I had 38 human beings. I didn't see a Black person until I was 17. I did it fairly and professionally and if the needed more help they got it. 20 years, two months and two days in the United States Air Force and during that time I learned the art of Supervision an Management. I took one of the most hated sections known throughout the Air Force in our speciality, and turned it into place where people now wanted to come and work instead of leave. This is the worst thing for Good ole white boys since Tiger won the Masters! It has brought hate up front and center in our Congress! The Far Right, when it pleases them, in Congress has made a goal and nothing else matters, to get him out! This Congress has been stalemated for four years, and yes just because he's Black! Racism has no place in our Government and I blame those who elected these close minded old fools. Then I found out why there weren't Black people in my town, the town didn't want any, racism was alive and well there to. I brought each one of them from where ever they were on the ladder and helped them be better. I had 22 military and 16 Civilians working for me. I didn't get all 4.0 College Grads in perfect physical condition and with no families. That's supervision, Jack. My father taught me a wonderful life tool once when he had to learn it.And it's the same way with Racism, " It takes far more work and time to work against someone than it does to work with them"! Just takes some understanding. And if people don't understand the different cultures and backgrounds of their people, then they don't understand the people. All ages, all nationalities and races.

It is difficult, maybe impossible, to quantify changes in attitude about race. But we know we've come a long way since Selma. The irony is that an earlier stereotype of black people being uninformed or erratic, as with Herman Cain or Allen West, goes unremarked when they share the platform with Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachman, or Rick Perry. We hear a lot less about The Bell Curve, thank goodness. It seems to me that we've witnessed a growth spurt in the number of young, gifted, and black men and women who have risen to prominence in the Obama age.

Just because we have a black President doesn't mean race relations are any better. In many cases I think they are worse. Not at all Jack. People will look for any reason to hate each other even when it is as stupid of a stance as skin color or heritage. We like to think we are progressive in the States, but since the 60s we have slowed and halted in civil rights.

Obama-appointed Judge Katherine Forrest of the U.S. Section 1021 of the NDAA could have set a slippery precedent for indefinite detention of American citizens. District Court for the Southern District of New York disagreed that the provision is merely a restatement of existing federal law, stating that the loose language did not “pass Constitutional muster” and could have a “chilling impact on First Amendment rights.”.

Rep. Justin Amash explained to his constituents via Facebook, “An American citizen living in Michigan makes a one-time donation to a non-violent humanitarian group. Years later, the group commits hostile acts against an ally of the U.S. Under the NDAA that just passed Congress, if the President determines the group was “associated” with terrorists, the President is authorized to detain the donor indefinitely, and without charge or trial.”. As U.S.

We need not assume that our representatives intend that outcome, but weakening legal protections has allowed unscrupulous men to transform republics into totalitarian states. Under NDAA, no one is safe from indefinite detention, effectively undoing the First, Fourth and Fifth Amendments and giving Americans good reason to fear their own government. Because the bill’s authors took little care to define meaningful words, “Al Qaeda” or “Taliban” could be replaced with “terrorist,” which itself is quickly becoming a word with no clear definition. .

Grass roots organizations all over the country, primarily coached by Tenth Amendment Center, have introduced the “Liberty Preservation Act” or petitioned their elected representatives to introduce legislation blocking state collusion with unconstitutional federal kidnapping of citizens. Should the NDAA not be struck down, this process will continue. Virginia was the first to nullify, and Arizona may be next. Several states have nullified or are nullifying the detention provisions.

According to the ACLU, both used their influence to push passage of the NDAA with the indefinite detention provision intact via closed-door committee meetings, without even a single hearing. . Who is responsible for this assault on liberty? Everyone who voted in favor, including Senators John McCain (R-Ariz.), a victim of unlawful military detention himself, and Carl Levin (D-Mich.).

“Suspicious activity,” which includes dying one’s hair often, paying for a coffee with cash, photographing populated locations, being interested in Internet privacy, or requesting tattoos that conceal extremist symbols, are all behaviors that warrant reporting to the “authorities.” Under a liberal interpretation of the NDAA, could these citizens arguably be hauled away forever based on simple accusation?. Last year, the FBI spread 25 fliers seemingly extracted from a dystopian novel through “threat areas,” including airport service providers, beauty/drug suppliers, construction sites, hobby shops, Internet cafes, martial arts studios, rental car offices and tattoo parlors encouraging Americans to spy on one another.

We are born with them. In the space of a decade, the United States has gone from a nation of laws to incipient dictatorship. Congress gave the president sweeping new powers, including the authority to detain American citizens indefinitely, without charge or trial. Government doesn’t “give” anyone rights. Elected officials can only protect them or take them away.

It gained significant traction after Judge Forrest’s ruling, but faced serious opposition from congressional leaders who believe that being accused of a crime equates to “waging war against America.” Despite Amash’s passionate closing statements, the amendment failed this morning, 182-238. This amendment would have banned indefinite detention of United States citizens. Only nineteen conservative and libertarian Republicans joined 163 Democrats in voting “yes” to preserving due process and habeas corpus. .

While young drivers are constantly reminded about the dangers of distracted driving, the message isn’t convincing enough. Most did so despite considering it very dangerous to text, use smart-phone apps or access the Internet while driving. A recent Consumer Reports survey found that one-third of young drivers, ages 16 to 21, admitted to texting while driving in the past month, according to the survey.

Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers and in many states, including Washington, laws have been passed that ban texting while driving. In the survey, however, more than half admitted to talking on a handheld phone during the last month, and some admitted they had even “operated smart-phone apps (8 percent) or used e-mail or social media (7 percent) while behind the wheel.”.

“Students had the opportunity to sit behind the wheel of a real car and experience the dangerous impact of texting while driving through a pair of virtual reality goggles,” said a news release from City Councilmember Bruce Harrell, who chairs the public safety committee and attended the event. Students at Seattle’s Garfield High School went through a similar exercise on Monday with an AT&T driving simulator.

That train’s a coming.”. Thanks for the support. That’s my vision for MCA DAY NYC. I’m going to build that. On May 11, both a Twitter and Facebook page went live with plans for an “MCA Day,” and organizer Michael Kearney is happy to announce that it will become a reality at New York’s Union Square this Saturday (May 19). Kearney posted a photo via Facebook of a subway train and stated, “Picture an NYC Subway car full of all types and walks of life singing Beastie Boys songs in unison.

He drafted a resolution that was heard and adopted by his fellow politicians. Meanwhile, New York State Senator Daniel Squadron also made sure that Yauch was recognized on the legislative floor. Resolution J4637-2011 recognizes Yauch’s many contributions to the state of New York, and while it stops short of declaring an official MCA Day in New York, it did allow the politicians a chance to take a break from their proceedings and honor his memory with the reading of the resolution.

In the resolution, it reads, “The music and message of the Beastie Boys evolved over the years, but they can’t, they don’t, they won’t stop changing the face of hip-hop, of music, and of our culture; and whereas, the Beastie Boys exemplified New York through a period in which grassroots creativity and a community of iconoclastic artists helped redefine and rejuvenate a city on the ropes, with iconic imagery from Brooklyn to Ludlow Street.”.

The resolution also addresses Yauch’s work outside the band with the charitable organization Milarepa, as the founder of the film distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories, and his life as a family man and activist. The full resolution was transmitted to Yauch’s family. The full text may be read via the New York Senate’s Open Access database.
